Strangers Passing By

In a world he doesn’t belong
his heart has lost its faith.
Lonely and discouraged,
he hasn’t found his place.
He goes from day to day uncaring,
besieged by bitterness and pain.
How his god would hate to see
the way his soul has changed.

She didn’t know it would happen,
that her heart could betray.
Her noble idea of love
had led her far astray.
Unwilling anymore to believe,
she closed her eyes against the pain,
and prayed God would forgive her
for leaving the world this way.

The see one another,
a chance encounter in place and time,
eyes flashing recognition
while strangers are passing by.
She was struck first by his smile
for the hope it revealed,
second by his gaze
for the things it made her feel.
He inhaled a sharply bated breath
and looks at her face,
wondering if God had finally answered,
if things would fall into place.

Let me touch you for a moment
and I’ll make you feel again.
Let me feel you for just a moment
And the past won’t matter then.
With strangers passing by
There’s no one here but us
So grant me the chance I’ve never had
To be someone you can trust.

Soul restored, heart overjoyed
I embrace thee.

As Erik from the book Phantom (by Susan Kay) says, "No one can choose where we will love."
